Pogue
Int. Pogue's Apartment, laying in bed is our protaginist, Vincent Pogue, 20 something jack of all trades. Doesn't have a steady job or source of income, so most of the stuff in his apartment is either rented or something he found and fixed up. The set is dimly lit, signifying that its late and that Vincent is asleep. Centerstage, there is a big calander, and over the calander, a clock. Throughout the play, these are always changing as the play progresses. In this scene it is 3:13 AM on a Wensday Morning. All is quite except for the sound of a couple passing cars. The floor is litterd with books and repair tools. After the audience has had about a minute to survey the room, the phone rings. Eventually Vincent's answering machine picks up the call. On the phone is Rachel, Vincent's Girlfriend.
Rachel: Pick up the phone Vince... Come on, its not that la.... well, I suppose it is a bit late. I need to talk to you... now! (Yelling into the phone) Wake Up! (Vincent stirs a little bit, but is still not awake). I don't want to have to do this to your answering machine Vince. Vince, god damn it, this is so like you, always so unreliable. (Her tone gets softer, she's about to say something delicate to him). Vince, I... I'm leaving, right now. I'm going to California. I know I told you I was only thinking about it, but the chance came to me to get down there for good about a month ago, and I even have a job and apartment lined up, and... and... and I don't know what to say Vince. I'm... I'm leaving you. I know this won't be a big thing to you and all. Things like this don't really change your life, I know, but I wanted to try and talk to you one last time, I wanted to explain this to you... Damn it Vince! Pick up the phone! God Damn it... well, I guess this is good-bye Vince, I'll write you a letter, though I doubt you'll read it. Bye Vince. (click)
(Vincent continues to stir in bed, still showing very little signs of life. He eventually stumbles out of his bed to his answering machine. He gets to the machine and hits play)
Machine: You have 4 new messages. Message one...
Laslow: 'Ey man, its Laslow, pick up the phone... Are you home man? Oh well, guess not, I just called to tell you that Julie was back in town for the week, aight? Talk to ya later man.
Machine: Message 2...
Julie: Hey there good looking, its me, Julie, I'm back in town for a couple days and I was hoping we could get together and do something. Anyway, call me when you get in... we never did get to finish what we started last time I visited.
Machine: Message 3...
Angelica: Vincent, alright, its time we talk. I'm sorry about what I said, alright, I know I can't do this in person, cause you'd just walk away. So, I figured the only way to get you to perhaps listen is to leave a message on your machine. Listen, I'm sorry for all that stuff I said, I was wrong, I was in a horrible mood and you were the first person who talked to me. There was all this stuff going on and I thought Greg was mad at me, and I shouldn't have said all that shit about you and Rachel... I was wrong, you to do have a relationship which can last. Anyway, please call me when you get this message, thats the general jist of what I want to say, but there's more, I'll hopefull talk to you later.
Bye.
Machine: Message 4...
Rachel: Pick up the phone Vince... Come on, its not that la.... well, I suppose it is a bit late. I need to talk to you... now! (Yelling into the phone) Wake Up! I don't want to have to do this to your answering machine Vince. Vince, god damn it, this is so like you, always so unrelia... (click)
Machine: Machine out of tape, please replace tape... (beep beep) End of Messages.
(Vincent throws hand half asleep at the phone, shrugs shoulders, and walks back to bed, collapsing in a heep).
Fade out
Scene 2 Int. Pogue's Apartment, later that morning, 4:30 AM
(Fade In) Apartment is still dimly lit, and Vincent is still in bed. The clock should have progressed to the new time. There is a knock at the door. Vince remains asleep. The knocking gets louder each time that Vince doesn't answer. After about 6 rounds of knocking Vince finally gets up. He throws on a shirt and starts towards the door. When he gets to the door he try's talking, but is still half asleep. When standing he should be wobbling and trying to keep himself up by holding unto the door knob.
Vince: Whooseee Dere?
Julie: (Somewhat muffled) It's me Vince, let me in.
Vince: Jzule?
Julie: Yeah, now hurry up. (Vince fumbles with the lock, and after much effort, gets the door open.)(Enter Julie, about 23, 5'6, brownish blonde hair, dressed in jeans and a light colored vest. As soon as she's through the door, she grabs Vince, hugs him and starts kissing him. Vince's body language show's he wasn't ready for this, he almost falls down. Julie quickly tries to lead Vince to the couch. She falls down on the couch, laying herself across it. Vince stands in front of the couch, looking down at her)
Vince: um, hi.
Julie: Hi, nice to see you, can we continue here, I'm kind of getting into the moment.
Vince: (still quite out of it) I haven't seen you in a couple months, how is everything?
Julie: Um, fine, can you sit down now?
Vince: Can I get ya something to drink or eat, I think I've got bread lieing around somewhere, I could make toast.
Julie: No, thats alright, I'd rather have you right now.
Vince: (Sits down on coach, away from Julie) um, Julie, what are you doing here exactally?
Julie: (leaning in toward him) What do you think I'm doing here (kisses him) exactally? (starts trying to be intimate with him again)
Vince: (pulls away) Julie, I kind of have a girlfriend ya know.
Julie: I know, and I have a boyfriend, whats your point?
Vince: Julie, ya know the rule, we can't fool around with each-other when were dating other people.
Julie: Vincent, I'm only gonna be here for another day. I live 3 states away, I don't really come down here that often, no ones gonna find out what were doing, and if they do, who cares, I'm gonna dump my boyfriend when I get back anyway. (starts pressing up against him). So relax, I remember when you used to love me popping up like this.
Vince: I still do, but I have this whole faith thing when I'm dating someone. However much I'd like to have "fun" right now, I can't, and trust me, I'd like too. And on top of everything else, I'm tired.
Julie: Well let me help you get your blood flowing (Hugs him tightly and tries doing a passionate kiss. They both close their eyes. It is obvious that Julie is the one keeping the embrace going, by following his head back as he rest it upon a pillow. Once there lips stop making contact and Vince's head is resting on the couch) Now that wasn't so bad, was it?... Vince?
Vince: (crawls up into a ball, and does various little things to show he's sleeping).
Julie: (somewhat sweetly)...jerk, hehe. Well, if your sleeping on the couch, I'm sleeping in your bed. We'll continue this in the morning. (Walks to Vince's bed and lays down) (Once it seems Julie is about to fall asleep, lights fade out).
Scene 3
Int. Vincent's apartment, noon the same day. The entire apartment should be light. Enter Julie from the kitchen, wearing one of Vince's t-shirts. Vince is still sleeping on the couch. Slowly, Vince wakes up, he yawns and stretchs. Noticing Vince awake, Julie walks over to Vince.
Julie: Morning (kisses him)
Vince: Oh, morning. What are you doing here?
Julie: What do you think?
Vince: Are we playing questions?
Julie: What's that?
Vince: Haven't we played this before?
Julie:
Vince: (stalling)... What time is it?
Julie: Redirect, I win.
Vince: Oh, we were playing just then?
Julie: Don't pretend like you didn't know
Vince: Okay, okay. Seriously though, what time is it?
Julie: (sips Orange Juice) A little after 12 I suppose.
Vince: (looks at the clock) Crap, I gotta go, I'm supposed to meet Rachel for lunch in like 20 minutes. (Jumps off couch to a dresser and starts going crazyily through his clothing) (Only sounding slightly curious) Hey Julez, how'd you get in here? Have you been here, ya know, I mean in my apartment, long?
Julie: (sly look on her face) Don't you remember last night?
Vince: (Takes out a very large button up hawian shirt, shakes head in dissapproval). All I remember from last night is that I ordered some chinesse, fell asleep. (not really caring) Come to think of it, how did I end up on the couch?
Julie: I was in your bed, and you didn't want to wake me up, remember?
Vince: (takes out a nice dress shirt, Julie crosses to him) (Once Vince has gotten the shirt and started walking towards the bed Julie closes the drawer). Yeah, right, haha.
Julie: Nah, you let me in last night, and then fell asleep on the couch, so I went to sleep in your bed. Anyway, I was hoping you and I could do something today, or tonight, or something. Ya know, have a little "fun."
Vince: Julz, didn't I tell you last time we talked, I've got a gf. Your welcome to meet her, I'm going to see her right now. As for having "fun", I'm gonna have to pass, I have this habit of not cheating on my gf's. Anyway, were supposed to have lunch at the deli down the street, want to come?
Julie: (Trying not to act like she cares) No, thats alright. I'll pass.
Vince: Well, your welcome to stay here, I should be back in like an hour. (goes to mirror, combs hair).
Julie: Alright, but when you get back, can we talk?
Vince: Sure, sure, we'll talk when I get back, but as for now, I've gotta be headed out that door. (Walks over to the door and then turns around) When was the last time we saw eachother in person?
Julie: 6 months ago.
Vince: 6 months... quite a while to say the least... really makes ya think....
Julie: Yeah...
Vince: Actually, now on second thought, it doesn't make me think of a thing, see ya in an hour.
Julie: Whatever
(Vince walks out the door, but leaves it open. Julie crosses to the door to close it. After closing the door, she rests up against it and slides down it so she is crouched on the floor.)
Julie: You really know how to make a girl feel special Vince. When your single, your the most romantic, energy filled, exciting, and entertaining person. Once you've got a girl whose yours those, it seems you change. I guess it was the same when we dated. (stands up and starts to walk towards the couch). It wasn't that long ago, was it? I mean when we were "together." We've always been friends, fairly close friends at that, and then we were more friends... and then I ruined it. I had to do something stupid, like move away... ha. Like I had control over that decision. (sits down on couch) I thought we made a promise to eachother when I left Vince. Didn't we? I'm not just imagening it... am I? I can't remember, it was so long ago... (background fades out) (In the foreground, a young Vincent and Julie are hugging. Rolling down Julie's cheeck are a couple of tears. When the two eventually break up the hug, Julie wipes her eyes.)
Young Julie: hehe, its not like we'll never see eachother again, right?
Young Vince: Yeah, right. We're connected, you and me. A couple states isn't gonna change us.
Y J: We're gonna have to break up, aren't we?
Y V: Nah, we can make this work (kisses her)
Y J: Vince, we shouldn't fool ourselves, we both know a relationship between the two of us wouldn't work. Maybe we should just let it go at that.
Y V: No, I swear, we can make this wo...(Julie puts her finger to his lip to silence him)
Y J: Sometimes these things just aren't meant to be Vince. (She pecks him on the lips)
Y V: I... I... I guess.... I guess not
Y J: Let's just leave it at that. Who knows, maybe when we both get older we can have another try at it.
Y V: Right! But, still, how about this. Whenever we see eachother, we can continue. When were apart, were completely single, but when we can see eachother, we'll be going out again. How about that?
Y J: That sounds like a ploy just so the both of us can get play when were together...
Y V: Well if ya wanna look at it that way...
Y J: But... but, it sounds like a good plan. Kind of like, friends with priveleges.
Y V: Exactally, friends with priveleges.
Y J: Yeah... (they embrace again and the foreground fades out on them) (Only the couch gets faded in so both Young Julie and Vincent can exit). (Julie is still on the couch, but now lieing down sideways with the back of her hand to her forehead)
Julie:
